The Long, Dark Night of Addiction
Maybe you feel like the heartache of addiction is a long, dark night of winter. You’re not alone in this feeling. In the words of John 1:5, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it." This heartache doesn't only affect those battling addiction; it deeply impacts their loved ones, too. Watching someone you care about struggle, desperately trying to escape their pain, can be truly heart-wrenching.
Longing for Connection
Have you ever found yourself longing for connection? Maybe you’ve noticed that connection has been absent for far too long, leading you to question the behaviors you see around you. When someone turns to video games, substances, overworking, or overeating, it often stems from a desire to feel connected—or at least to escape feelings of disconnection. These behaviors can serve as temporary relief from a longing that feels unreachable.
Understanding the Pathways of Comfort
In a recent podcast interview, I spoke with a professional using cold lasers to help those battling addiction. She explained how our brains have neurological pathways that seek comfort in what’s familiar. Just like animals in the Colorado snow who tread the same path over and over, our neurotransmitters often follow the same route, seeking relief from anxiety, frustration, and confusion.
But there is hope. Have you considered that Jesus invites us to shift our focus and redirect those well-worn paths of addiction toward Him? As noted in John 15:5, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
Turning Toward the Light in the Darkness
He gently knocks on the door of your heart, asking you to let Him in. When you face struggles and fears, remember to run down this new path toward Him. It should become so familiar that you instinctively choose Him in moments of distress, whispering, “Jesus, help me,” or “Thank you.”
As you settle in for this long winter’s night, let’s remember that this path leads us to the light. In this season, when the world can feel overwhelming—with worries about your husband’s struggles with addiction and the pressures of daily life—it’s crucial to shift your gaze from your struggles and turn toward the Christ child. Jesus holds all those you care about close to His heart; He is the one who can save them and bring them into the light.
Opening Your Heart to His Presence
It’s easy to become consumed by the chaos around you—worries about your husband, your children, and the pressures of life can easily turn your focus away from Him. But when you fixate on these worries, you risk missing the light of Jesus shining within you.
To truly shine for those you love, you must open your heart to that gentle knocking at the door. Jesus wants to fill you with His love so that you can be a source of light for others. By holding onto this gift loosely and inviting God in, you allow His presence to guide you.
Strengthened by His Light
Colossians 1:11-12 reminds us, "May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light."
Embracing the Path Forward
Have you found yourself turning your eyes away from heartache? It’s essential to focus on the greatest love you’ll ever know. In doing so, you open yourself to the beauty of God, who says, “I love you, and I want to shine my light through you.” Even amidst the chaos of addiction and the challenges of life, He offers a path forward—a well-worn path just for you.
Finding Healing and Hope Together
Let’s embrace this journey together, finding solace in connection, love, and the light that guides us through the darkest times. Your steps on this path can lead to healing, hope, and a stronger bond with those you care for most deeply.

The "Do Nothing Christmas Day"
We saved our family Christmas Day by doing nothing. Six or seven Christmases ago we started doing “nothin’ ” for Christmas Day. It came as a revelation to my husband and I when the boys were really little.
