What does it mean to live alongside shame without being consumed by it? In a powerful conversation on the Faith Over Addiction podcast, Alegria Moran shares her profound journey from the depths of addiction and prostitution to spiritual recovery and feminine empowerment. Her story isn't just about overcoming addiction - it's about learning to accept reality, break free from obsessive thinking, and discover who you truly are beneath the roles you play.
The Rock Bottom That Became a Foundation
Alegria's story begins at age 16-17 with drug use that quickly spiraled into addiction and prostitution by age 18. For a decade, she lived in what she calls "chaos of existing" - no responsibilities, no routine, completely disconnected from reality. Her rock bottom came at age 38 in Japan, sitting alone with a bottle of whiskey during the 2011 Fukushima earthquake.
"I felt like a shell of a human," she recalls. "I was completely in a place where I had no idea where to go."
But this moment of complete surrender became her turning point. When she stopped trying to fix her life "her way" and accepted that her decisions weren't working, space opened for a different path.
The Spiritual Practice of Living With Shame
One of the most striking aspects of Alegria's journey is her honest acknowledgment that shame doesn't simply disappear. After 14 years of sobriety, she still experiences waves of shame, especially while writing her upcoming book "I Want Out."
"Breaking free from shame - it's not something that I can say now today that it's gone forever," she explains. "It's something that pops up every once in a while... I have the tools today to kind of manage to live beside it in peace."
Her approach centers on the 12-step spiritual program, particularly the first step: acceptance. Instead of fighting shame or trying to make it disappear, she practices accepting reality as it is - not worse than it is, not better than it is, but exactly as it is.
Breaking Free From Obsessive Thinking
Beyond traditional addiction recovery, Alegria found healing through Obsessive Thinkers Anonymous (OTA), a program she helped develop. The statistics she shares are startling: only 5% of our thoughts are conscious, while 95% are subconscious loops.
"We are in loops all the time," she observes. "If you be honest with yourself and just observe for a second, check in your own day. How many times you think the same thoughts again and again?"
Her example of getting stuck in obsessive thoughts about business goals illustrates how we can spiral into self-criticism and exhaustion over repeated thoughts that serve no purpose. The solution isn't to fight these thoughts, but to:
Stop and breathe
Accept that you're trapped in obsessive thinking
Let go of trying to let go
Allow choice to emerge naturally
"The minute that you accept that that's your reality right now and accept that there is nothing you can do about it right now, just let go and the rest will follow."
Reclaiming True Femininity
Alegria's journey to reclaim her feminine power involved first completely letting go of how she had used her sexuality to manipulate and survive. In rehab, she was advised to wear baggy clothes, put her hair up, avoid makeup, and connect with her authentic self without the physical attributes she had relied on.
"I hated myself. It was so hard for me," she admits about this process. But this stripping away of external identity became the foundation for discovering who she really was.
Today, she distinguishes clearly between identity and roles: "I have two kids. I have twins. They're seven years old... But is that who I am? No. It's just part of my reality and my responsibilities."
Daily Spiritual Practice
Alegria's recovery is maintained through consistent spiritual practices:
Morning Prayer: Asking God for strength to be present and accept life as it is
12-Step Meetings: Attending OTA meetings five times a week
Service: Contributing to her recovery community
Present Moment Awareness: Constantly returning to the here and now
Intuitive Living: Trusting her feminine intuition, which "never gets it wrong"
The Power of Acceptance
The thread running through Alegria's entire story is acceptance - not passive resignation, but active spiritual surrender. When life doesn't go according to her plans (like her child not wanting to shower), she practices accepting reality rather than forcing her will.
"Accepting reality is the most important. It's the hardest practice for me," she shares. "Wake up in the morning and just embrace life and whatever comes my way... when immediately when you are open to life, life can flow through you because you're open. You're not blocked."
A Message of Hope
Alegria's story offers profound hope for anyone struggling with shame, addiction, or feeling disconnected from their authentic self. Her journey demonstrates that:
Recovery is possible, even from the deepest places of brokenness
Shame can be lived with peacefully rather than eliminated
True feminine power comes from authenticity, not manipulation
Spiritual practice provides daily tools for living with acceptance
You are not your roles - you are a divine spark having a human experience
As she prepares to publish her book "I Want Out" to help other women exit the adult industry, Alegria continues living proof that no matter how far you've fallen, spiritual recovery and authentic empowerment are always possible.
